What a reply is worth, and how long it should be

A reply of 180 to 280 characters gets an answer 2.2× as often as a one-liner (67.7% against 30.7%). Replies are 69.4% of what a typical founder posts and 13.4% of their views.

The answer, before the working

Replying is the single biggest thing this roster does. 51,985 replies in six weeks against 12,242 posts of their own and 5,165 quotes — 74.7% of the 69,596 things they published on X.

It does not pay in reach, and it is not supposed to. For a typical founder replies are 69.4% of what they publish but only 13.4% of their views and 10.1% of their reactions. A reply is a conversation, not a broadcast.

So judge it by whether somebody answers. Across everything measured here, 44.7% of replies got a reply back — and how long you write is what moves that number.

Length is the whole lever

A reply under 40 characters is answered 30.7% of the time. One of 180 to 280 characters is answered 67.7%2.2× as often.

The climb is steepest early and then stops. Past 280 characters the rate is 68.6%, which is no better than 180 in any way a reader would notice. Two or three sentences is the whole trick.

The gain is nearly all in the first 180 characters; past 280 the line is flat.

Every band rests on at least 165 founders, so none of this is a handful of people.

And a longer reply is seen by more people too

Views climb too, though less tidily: 119 for a one-liner against 210 for a long one, about 1.8×. The middle of the range wobbles rather than rising step by step, so read it as a direction and not as a ladder. Small numbers either way — that is what a reply is — but nothing is being traded away: longer is better on both counts.

The direction matches the answer rate. The middle bands are not in order, so this is a trend and not a ladder.

It holds whether you are small or large

Under 5,000 followers the answer rate climbs from 24.7% for a one-liner to 53.7% at 180 to 280 characters. Over 50,000 it climbs from 36.8% to 76.5% over the same two bands. Different starting points, same direction, same size of climb.

A large account gets answered more often at every length, which is what you would expect and is not something you can do anything about. The climb is the part you control.

Does replying grow you? Not on its own.

The quarter of founders who reply most grew 1.8% a week; the quarter who reply least grew 0.03%. That looks like a strong case for replying, and on its own it would be.

It is not on its own. The quarter who POST most grew 1.37% a week against 0.07% for the quarter who post least — almost the same picture. People who do more of everything grow; that is most of what both of these are showing.

The test that separates them is whether the MIX matters — whether somebody whose output leans towards replies grows faster than somebody the same size whose output leans towards posts. It barely does. So: reply because it starts conversations and because a good reply gets answered, not because replying instead of posting will grow you.

What to do with this

Write two or three sentences, not one line. Under 40 characters is answered 30.7% of the time; 180 to 280 is answered 67.7% — 2.2× as often. That is the whole finding.

Stop at about 280 characters. Past that the answer rate is flat and so are the views. Longer is not better, it is just longer.

Do not expect reach. Replies are 69.4% of a typical founder's output and 13.4% of their views. If reach is what you want, that is what your own posts are for.

Do not swap posting for replying. Doing more of both is what tracks growth here; leaning one way rather than the other does not.

How this was measured

Every reply published by the founders board on X between 6 July to 16 August 2026: 50,777 replies from 436 accounts. Quotes and original posts are counted separately and are not in these figures.

A reply counts as answered when the account it replied to posted a reply back to it. Length is the character count of the reply text.

The share figures are per founder and then typical across founders, so somebody who replies thousands of times cannot move them on their own.

What this cannot tell you

Who you reply to is not measured. Replying to a large account and replying to a friend are the same thing here, and they are plainly not the same decision.

A longer reply is usually a more thoughtful reply. This cannot separate the length from the thought, so read it as "say something substantial", not as "pad it out".

It counts whether somebody answered, not whether the answer was any good, and not whether it turned into anything.

Growth is measured over the same six weeks as the replies, on 220 founders with enough follower readings to compare. Six weeks is short for a growth question.
